How to Recreate the Practical Magic Kitchen
Forget the Pinterest kitchen. Here’s how to conjure the most iconic movie kitchen of all time.
I have always believed that the soul of a house reveals itself in the kitchen. It’s where the floors are worn the fastest, where the air smells like simmering garlic and sometimes candle smoke, where gossip and secrets travel faster than the kettle’s whistle. And when I think of the most magical kitchen ever put on film, it isn’t Julia Child’s, or Nancy Meyers’ polished white sets, it’s the Owens sisters’ kitchen from Practical Magic.
That kitchen is more than a backdrop. It’s a love spell in itself. Messy shelves, soft glowing light, herbs swinging from the rafters and, of course, the clink of midnight margaritas. It isn’t perfect, in fact, that’s exactly what makes it so enchanting. It’s lived-in, layered, brimming with stories. It’s also brimming with secrets that it would never tell.
And maybe that’s the trick of making a home that feels like magic. It doesn’t require the right designer backsplash or a curated Pinterest mood board. It requires spices you actually use, crumbs left on the table after a long night, a candle burning while you stir something on the stove. A kitchen that hums, breathes and feels not like a movie set, but something more.
So if you’ve ever wished your own home could feel a little more like Practical Magic and building a observatory / greenhouse isn’t in the budget, let’s start where the Owens sisters would: in the kitchen
Room by Room: How to recreate the practical magic aesthetic in your kitchen
There are movie houses you admire, and then there are movie houses you want to move into. For me, it’s always been the Owens sisters’ home from Practical Magic. White clapboard, wraparound porches, a kitchen that feels like it’s held centuries of gossip and spells. The tragedy, of course, is that it was just a set. it was torn down after filming, never to be lived in. Let’s honor her memory build pieces of it in our own homes.
This series, Room by Room, is my love letter to a house or space that makes that nostalgic part my soul sing. Each week we’ll step into a different iconic home, dwelling or closet. Whether it’s the kitchen, the library, the conservatory, the bedrooms, even the porch. I’ll show you how to curate the look, the feeling, the rituals, and the recipes that made it iconic. Think of it as both a guide and a spell book: part thrift list, part recipe card, part diary.
So light a candle, pour a cup of something warm, and let’s begin where every magical home begins: the kitchen.
This is the first in my Room by Room Practical Magic series. Next up: Sabrina’s Bedroom. Subscribe so you don’t miss it every room has its own hauls, recipes, and
thrifty suggestions.
The Shelves: Messy, Full, Alive
Minimalism has no place here. This kitchen is meant to look like a hundred dinners, a thousand stories, and a lifetime of herbs and crockery. ingredients should be ready at hand, recipe books open to our favorite page
Consider these decor ideas:
Keeping old glass jars, even if the lids don’t match (you can also add sticker match strikers to the bottom to make them match boxes)
Layering Wooden cutting boards
Countertop pottery crock and fill with wooden spoons, rolling pins, and bread boards with patina
Hanging Lodge Cast Iron Pans (budget-friendly, last forever) or
Copper mixing bowls (Etsy has vintage, Williams-Sonoma has polished new) I also love these and think they look amazing on a counter if you are limited cabinets. Hanging these by a window would also give a soft reflective light during the day
Stacks of ceramic mugs (Anthropologie’s “latte bowls” are an easy stand-in)
Layering plates on the wall demodernizes any kitchen. I love these
use your fresh herbs as decor. Encourage them to propagate and grow roots. Then, plant them in the window.
Keep things visible. Put your herbs, teas, and flours in jars, not hidden in cupboards. Layer, don’t hide. my favorite finds to complete these looks including my favorite Vermont pottery brand
The Herbs: Life Hanging from Beams
Every magical kitchen breathes with green. This also helps give a dark space much needed light. The Owens’ space was alive with bundles of rosemary, lavender, and sage strung from hooks. Not a green thumb? Dried herbs and branches add an earthy texture and don’t require any nurturing.
How to Start:
Buy a bundle of herbs at the farmer’s market or grocery store.
Tie with twine, hang upside down in a sunny window.
Once dried, crumble into jars for cooking and spells.
Other Ways to Weave Greenery In:
Small potted herbs (mint, thyme, basil) on the windowsill.
Apothecary bottles filled with teas and dried petals on this adorable spice rack
A trailing ivy or pothos plant climbing across a shelf.
using branches as decor (I’m serious) you can add sticks, leaves and even crows to give texture and warmth
The Glow (turn off the big light)
The Practical Magic kitchen glows golden. It’s soft, flickering, a little uneven.
Consider these decor ideas:
Lamps with fabric shades. I love these battery operated lights that add a soft glow on a dark shelf
Brass or wrought-iron candle sconces.
lace curtains. These provide a bit of privacy from the street while still allowing in a soft light
stained glass to place over the window (these decals also work nicely for the same effect, but renter friendly)
Beeswax taper candles (Etsy, local makers, or Target for affordable sets).
Battery-powered votives for safety if you have pets or kids.
replace the big light with better energy, like a stained glass shade or sconce like the one below:
Turn off the overheads. One lamp + a handful of candles = instant Owens kitchen.
The Rituals: What Happens in the Kitchen
The magic is not just in the objects — it’s in what happens around them.
Midnight Margaritas
Coffee Spells:
Whisper your intentions into your morning cup. (It’s corny. It also works.)
say something nice to yourself on a post it and put it on this bulletin board
How to Get the Look (your grocery list)
Thrift / Antique Hunt:
Glass apothecary jars
Cast-iron pans & Dutch ovens
Lace curtains
Anything copper
Candle sconces
Curio cabinets for herbs & spices
Modern Buys (Shop it all here)
also goes without saying that many of the things on this list make incredible bridal shower gifts.
The Owens’ kitchen works because it’s alive. It doesn’t feel like a disposable set, it feels like if it could speak it would sit you down at the table and offer you a cup of tea. It’s layered with memory, crumbs, herbs, and light. It hums with rituals: midnight margaritas, sisterly gossip, coffee spells, the everyday magic of gathering.
Start small: thrift a jar, hang a bundle of herbs, light a candle instead of the overhead. Slowly, you’ll find yourself standing in your own Practical Magic kitchen. Just remember to always wear your tiger’s eye when there’s blood on the moon.
